Questions by Michael Lingner to Answers by Franz Erhard Walther

Do we still know what a "work" is and can we still believe that certain properties are inherent to aesthetic states and can be materialized by the artist? What has made this opinion become suspect? Does art still exist if the artist no longer produces the work, but only creates the instrumental premises that could lead to the creation of a work? Then where is the work to be situated - in the head? Can the layman who handles the instruments assume the responsibility of making the work, instead of the artist? And what could motivate him? How can we speak in qualitative terms or any terms of a "work"? How can the inner, mental forming of the work be imagined? What does it consist of? Can mental material, which is accessible only in the linear dimension of time, be organized in the same way as materials that exist spatially? Is there anything aesthetic about this form of organisation? Are we not dealing with the art of pure memory, which excludes experience? Is there anything that is still physical and figurative, pictorial and three-dimensional, or are there only abstract relations which are best rendered conceptually? Can a work that is happening now be built out of concepts burdened by the ballast of their historical application? How can concepts become shape and shapes become concept? Does everything always have to be fragmentary or do processes also have a totality?

Without an answer: How is art possible if there is no direct contact between matter and consciousness, or between different systems of consciousness, but only observation and involvement in communication?
